Mind Your Relationships

HPB recently launched Mind Your Relationships, a community mental well being awareness programme on 28 March 2008. The aim is reach out to the general community with an emphasis on reaping the benefits of social support to positively impact personal mental wellness.

“Building positive relationships contribute to an individual’s mental wellness in many ways. Studies have shown that adults who are mentally healthy missed fewer workdays, and reported the fewest chronic physical diseases and conditions,” said Ms Ms Sng Yan Ling, Manager of Mental Health Education Department at HPB.

Ms Sng added that “Colleagues at work can often be a huge source of support. They could be the people you turn to when you need a listening ear, a hand to manage new challenges at work, or just someone to share good news with.”

Considering the amount of time many of us spend at work, the workplace is definitely one of the best starting points to take care of our mental wellbeing.

As part of the Mind Your Relationships programme, a series of 12 Zo cards will be made available at island wide venues, from April 2008 to March 2009. Each Zo card contains a message and easy-to-follow fun tip to encourage individuals to work on nurturing healthy relationships. Workplaces can also look forward to getting these Zo cards in the month of October! Keep a look out for our emailer closer to date!

Other activities of the Mind Your Relationships programme include talks, workshops and contests to increase the awareness of the benefits of building good relationships. A series of educational talks, “Nurturing Your Mind” is conducted every 3rd Saturday afternoon of the month at the Singapore Bontanic Gardens More details are available on www.healthymind.sg

I-Run: Calling All Running Enthusiasts!

Running enthusiasts can now make a sprint for their favourite sport as I-Run, an initiative specifically developed by Health Promotion Board for working adults who love to jog, now gets extended to Science Park and Jurong International Business Park every Wednesday and Friday from 6.00 to 7.00 pm.

These two locations were chosen because of their large working population and several scenic running routes.

Who can be happier than Ms Janet Lua about this piece of good news! Ms Lua, who works in Science Park, has been travelling from her workplace to the weekly I-Run sessions at Singapore River Promenade.

“Running is a very good way to de-stress from work! I-Run keeps me strong and fit physically and mentally. Now that the organiser is bringing it to the doorstep of my workplace, I will certainly get my colleagues to join me,” said Ms Lua.

I-Run was first launched in June 2007 at the Singapore River Promenade with a weekly run on Thursdays. In November 2007, responding to the runners’ demand, the number of sessions increased to twice a week with each session seeing an average of 55 regular participants.

The main aim was to create a platform for working adults who enjoy jogging or running to incorporate it into their daily routine. CBD was initially chosen as it had the critical mass for the program to succeed in the long run, with a high density of working adults in the area.

Ms Chong Jia Jia, an administration assistant at UOB Plaza, is a passionate supporter of I-Run. She shared that when she first started running, she could barely complete 3 km. Today, she gets through the 5 km with a smile. She said: “Ever since I joined I-Run, I find myself more energetic both at work and at play”.

Today, I-Run has generated much interest among the working community.

Running clinics are also organised for i-Run participants to equip them with the technical knowledge and skills for them to jog safely and prevent injury.

To register for i-Run, simply log on to www.i-run.com.sg or call 6435 3171. Registration is free.
