Racing in Singapore has a long and illustrious history, dating back to 1842. The club moved to its present racecourse located at Kranji in August 1999. The move opens a new era in the Club’s history as it seeks to play a bigger role in the international racing arena. The highlight of The Singapore International Racing Festival is the running of two of the richest races in the region, the S$3 million Singapore Airlines International Cup and the S$1 million KrisFlyer International Sprint on Sunday, 18th May 2008 at the Singapore Racecourse.
Inaugurated in 2000, the Singapore Airlines International Cup (SAIC) is an international Group 1 event and its S$3 million prize money makes it the richest racing event in the region. The race, a 2,000m weight-for-age event, has been run and won seven times with winners from Singapore, England, Dubai, Germany, Australia and Japan, making it truly an international event. What is remarkable is that in just eight short years, the SAIC has become more just than a race. It is a cultural experience that has both socialites and racing identities from around the globe heading to Singapore in May each year.
After a five-year hiatus, the explosive KrisFlyer International Sprint is back, bigger than ever, with the world’s fastest horse chasing the S$1 million prize money on offer. Considered one of the richest sprint events in the world, racing fans can look forward to some of the world’s leading equine athletes pit their skill and speed as they compete over 1,200 metres at weight=for-age conditions for the coveted trophy. An estimated one billion viewers around the world will watch the races ‘live’ or on delayed basis.
